According to the publisher's editorial profile, kindergarten is now the “largest independent specialist magazine in Germany for education”. In addition to basic psychological and pedagogical questions , the topics covered also include current political and social "changes with a view to all types of childcare outside the family". In addition, articles are published on "Growing up children [...] with a view to Europe and further abroad".
The supplementary management booklet has been published since 2008, which mainly deals with management tasks in early childhood education, especially for management tasks in day-care centers and kindergartens .

Since the first edition in 1971, kindergarten has been published by the Herder publishing house today . The editorial team consists of five permanent editors and a group of freelancers. For years she has been working with a network of educators, specialist advisers, management staff, trainers and lecturers at universities and technical colleges. Furthermore, kindergarten today cooperates with the trade journal Frühhe Kindheit , the German League for Children , the German Youth Institute , the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Robert Bosch Foundation .
