King's House

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

King's House was a castle in Winchester in the English county of Hampshire . Winchester was the capital of Wessex and England in Anglo-Saxon times , but lost importance after the Norman conquest of England .

Sir Christopher Wren designed the palace for King Charles II in the style of the Palace of Versailles , only slightly smaller. In 1683 it was built on the site of Winchester Castle . It should have wonderful views of the city and gardens and paths down to the cathedral .

The shell of the castle was completed, but then the money ran out and the project was later discontinued. In 1894 the unfinished building caught fire and was destroyed. Columns and parts of the decorative masonry were used in the construction of the Peninsula Barracks , which were erected in 1900 to replace the burned-down shell. Today the Winchester's Military Museums are housed there.
