King George Memorial Fountain
The King George Memorial Fountain or King George V Fountain ( German King George V. Fountain ) in the West African state of Gambia is located on the edge of MacCarthy Square and a street crossing in the capital Banjul .
history
The fountain was opened on May 12, 1937, the day of the coronation of the British King George VI. inaugurated in memory of King George V, who died in 1936, in what was then the colony of British Gambia. The monument in the form of a pavilion is painted cream-white and banded in red. The four open sides are reminiscent of styles of oriental architecture.
The drinking fountain, which is not in operation (as of 2009), is under the special protection of a national monument .
