Kingdome 19 (actually Daniel Schunack ; * April 1966 in East Berlin ) is a German erotic photographer . As a photo graphic artist, he specializes in post-processed male photographs.

Life

Schunack grew up in Berlin-Pankow and initially trained as a graphic designer. After the opening of the inner German border, he started a job in the advertising department of a department store.

He then looked after international artists and their exhibitions in a large Berlin art institution. He discovered his passion for graphically altered photos and quickly perfected his technique into an independent style.

Under the name "Kingdome 19" (a combination of the English terms Kingdom and Pleasure Dome and the centimeter length 19) he developed a post-processing technique for himself.

In 1997, the gay publisher brought Bruno Gmünder in his publishing a first narrow 50-page Kingdome 19 Booklet with elaborately reworked Men images on the market. In the mid-1990s, three follow-up books at the gay publisher Volker Janssen (Cape Town) were even more successful : The work show "2 Omen", which shows many unpublished works from 1994 to 1998 in over 100 pages, the concept book, which was developed exclusively with African, dark-skinned models: " Exposition: 3 "and the first complete band of soldiers and prisoners:" Arrested ". His illustrated books have been published by the original publishing house since 2004: the 160-page, "Universal", which shows US porn stars like "Thom Barron", "Spike", "Rafael Carreras" and "Joe Landon" and the 2006 illustrated book "Wicked Dreams", in which all works match the mood of over 90 Elton John songs.

In 2008 the second Soldiers & Prison Volume followed: "Convicts" with over 100 pages. The concept book provocatively shows the eroticism behind prison walls. In 2014 Kingdome 19 published the large-format illustrated book "2014 MEN" and in 2017 the double book "Nostalgia" followed with 2 separate subject areas: "Italian Edition" and "Egyptian Edition".

With 9 of his own books, Kingdome 19 has developed into one of the most famous erotic photographers in Germany and has a global fan base.

Working method

Kingdome 19 prefers decorated nudes (almost exclusively male models). Most of the pictures show men with large genitals in the poses of Greco-Roman statues with meandering garlands, Egyptian hieroglyphics, and elements of Greek mythology.

Like few other photo graphic artists, e.g. B. Kelly Grider (America), Jan Saudek (Czech Republic) and Jo Brunenberg (Netherlands), Kingdome 19 also remains true to the labor-intensive, traditional laboratory technology, although digital technology is otherwise internationally established in the photo sector.

By using several negatives or foils and laying them on top of each other during development, these laboratory specialists achieve an antique look. To intensify this effect, they add sepia tones to make the skin look warmer. Deliberate scratches and blurring make the results appear like images from the beginnings of the daguerreotype .

In doing so, the few traditional photo graphic artists with the production of the works distance themselves from the very large number of modernist industry colleagues, such as Pierre & Gilles (France), Paul Hamilton (Great Britain) and Richard de Chazal (Australia), who switched to electronic processing at the turn of the millennium (Photoshop). However, the final image result of both groups, the laboratory technician and the computer technician, is later almost indistinguishable.

Some of Kingdome 19's pictures show subtle eroticism with dreamily meditating men, other motifs show muscle-packed athletes.

In the seventh book "Convicts", overlaid lettering can now only be seen in Latin in order to intensify the ancient look of the finished one-offs. Since the beginning of his artistic career, Kingdome 19 has repeatedly used cryptology as a special means of expression in his work. In "Convicts" there is a hidden book code that can only be recognized by reading all the page codes one after the other. In the book "Nostalgia" he continues the Latin language as a means of style and expression.

The fact that the artist offers heavy pornography on his homepage certainly also contributes to the success. His “box sets” - which are available with every illustrated book - contain a CD-ROM with explicit “making of” photos, unpublished erection images and intimate snapshots of the models. Within these "box sets" you will also find unpublished unique designs, all hand drawings and the explanations of the cryptic statements and messages.

Kingdome 19 is interesting for collectors of art photography because all final exposures are only available once before they are numbered and signed as so-called unique pieces in the size 30 × 40 cm. Kingdome 19 publishes three to four themed collections each year, each with 8 to 20 unique items.
