The Kingston Flyer between Kingston and Fairlight

The Kingston Flyer is a museum railway that ran on the restored 14 km long end of the former Gore – Kingston railway line between Kingston and Fairlight Station on New Zealand's South Island .

history

The name Kingston Flyer was originally a train that ran regularly between the cities of Gore and Kingston between 1886 and 1937, until 1957 when there was seasonal demand . After the line was finally closed in 1979, two steam locomotives and historic passenger coaches were restored on a private initiative and put back into operation in 1982 under the old name as a museum railway on the almost 14 km long end of the line from Kingston.

In 2002, the Kingston Flyer 2002 Society Inc was founded to maintain the train , and the 32 founding members included actor Sam Neill and director Peter Jackson . Due to financial difficulties, the bankruptcy followed and the business had to be closed in 2009 and offered for sale.

Thereupon the New Zealand businessman David Bryce bought the railway infrastructure and the vehicles in an internet auction . The facilities were restored and operations resumed on October 29, 2011.

In the fall of 2013, the operation was stopped again and everything was offered for sale.

business

The operation is powered by two steam locomotives and seven historic, four-axle truck - railroad cars performed. The two steam locomotives are:

  • A B 778 (YOC 1925)
  • A B 795 (built in 1927; the locomotive was used in front of the Royal Train on the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II's state visit to New Zealand in 1953.)
