Kington and Eardisley Railway

Kington and Eardisley Railway was a British railway company based in Herefordshire , England .

The company was founded on June 30, 1862. Shareholders included the members of Parliament Charles Morgan , Godfrey Morgan and Richard Green-Price and the architect Richard Kyle Penson . The director was Richard Meredith, an entrepreneur from Kington . Thomas Savin was won as a building contractor . The Kington and Eardisley Railway took over the Kington Tramway and used sections of the embankment to build an eleven kilometer long railway line from Eardisley to Kington. Construction began in March 1863. After Savin went bankrupt soon after, construction had to be stopped. In 1868 an agreement was finally reached with the Great Western Railway to build and operate the line. Further work began in 1872. The line opened on August 3, 1874, had a transition to the Hereford, Hay and Brecon Railway at Eardisley . On September 26, 1875, the route was extended by ten kilometers from Kington to New Radnor .

On July 1, 1897, the Great Western Railway took over the Kington and Eardisley Railway. As part of the Beeching ax , the railway line was shut down in 1962.
