Cinema studio Riga

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Riga Cinema Studio (Lat .: Rīgas Kinostudija ) is the oldest film studio in Latvia . It was founded in 1948 and has had its current name since 1958. It has been located in Šmerļa ielā 3, Riga, since 1961 . During the time of the Latvian SSR , the studio covered the entire production from the film idea to the script to the finished product. Up to 1000 people were employed and practically all Latvian films of the post-war period were produced. The buildings are home to well-equipped recording studios from the 1960s, which are among the largest in Northern Europe.

history

When Latvia was annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, various private film companies were nationalized into a cinema studio. Under German occupation, various Latvian-language films were then recorded under the name Ostland Film GmbH and "Rīgas Filma" until 1944. After the establishment of the LSSR, the studios for feature films and documentaries were merged in 1948 and were given their current name in 1958. At that time, the recording studios were still scattered across different parts of the city of Riga, such as the New Theater or the Filharmonie . From 1963, three modern, large-scale recording studios could be put into operation in a new centralized building complex designed by the architects V. Voronow and A. Okunjew. In the Šmerļa ielā 3 , now were all working groups: the editorial board, The Documentary Department, the dolls Film Group and the Arts and director Soviet.

The cinema studio had its own workshops for film preparation, recording technology, decoration and technical structures, lighting, sound technology, film processing, assembly, mechanization and car transport. About half of the 15 films produced annually were full-length feature films. Members of the Art soviets were recruited initially mainly from well-known directors and actors of the theater as Alfred Amtmanis-Briedītis , Vija Artmane , Edward Smiļģis , Elza Radzina . After 1965, young actors were trained in the affiliated people's cinema theater studio (Lat .: Tautas kinoaktieru studija ) and a stuntman department was set up.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , almost no films were produced in the studio. However, the buildings are often rented out for major events such as TV shows. The documents, photographs, costumes, backdrops and technical equipment stored in the studio now belong to the Riga Cinema Museum. A civil lawsuit has been going on for several years over the copyrights to films produced in Soviet times.
