Kinouchi Yoshi ( Japanese 木 内 克 ; born June 27, 1892 in Mito ( Ibaraki Prefecture ); died March 8, 1970 ) was a Japanese sculptor of the Taishō and Shōwa period .

life and work

Kinouchi Yoshi moved to Tōkyō in 1914 and enrolled in the art school for sculpture, the Chōso-juku (彫塑 塾), directed by Asakura Fumio . From 1916 he exhibited at the "Bunter" and then at the "Teiten".

Kinouchi lived in Paris from 1921 to 1935. During his first year he attended the “ Académie de la Grande Chaumière ” and was taught by Bourdelle there. He then went to museums and continued his education without a teacher. He submitted works to the Salon des Indépendants , the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d'Automne . Kinouchi immersed himself more and more in the sculptures of the archaic Greeks and dealt extensively with the terracotta technique.

After returning to Japan, he exhibited his work for a while at the Nika-kai (二 科 会), but after the Pacific War he joined the Shinju-kai (真珠 会). He mainly dealt with female nudes in bronze and in terracotta with a good feeling for movement and liveliness of the representation. In 1951 he received the "Mainich Fine Arts Price" and in 1962 the highest award of the "Exhibition of Japanese Contemporary Art" (現代 日本 美術展, Gendai Nihon Bijutsu-ten), which was awarded that year.

Representative works include “Face of a Woman” (女 の 顔, Onna no Kao), “Sleeping Woman” (寝 て い る 女, Nete iru Onna), “Cat” (猫, Neko) and “Woman” (女, Onna).
