Kinpurnie Castle

Kinpurnie Castle is a country house near the village of Newtyle near Blairgowrie in the Scottish county of Angus . Historic Scotland has listed Kinpurnie Castle as a Category B Historic Building.

history

Originally owned by William Oliphant, Lord of Aberdalgie , after King Robert the Bruce gave it to him in 1317. It later came into the possession of James Stuart Mackenzie , who had an observatory built on Kinpurnie Hill .

Kinpurnie was one of the lots that ship magnate Sir Charles Cayzer bought for his sons. He bought it in 1902 from the Trustees of the Earl of Wharncliffe . Various Cayzers Castle Line ships were named after Kinpurnie Castle.

The country house was built in 1907 in the Scottish Baronial Style. It was designed by Patrick Thoms from Thoms and Wilkie architecture firm in Dundee . This was a student of Sir Robert Lorimer . The mantelpiece in the drawing room is from Ralston House . The stucco was done by the Bromsgrove Guild and the oak paneling by Methven, Hyslop & Co. of Dundee. The property also includes Thriepley House .

After the death of Sir James Cayzer in 2012, the property was put up for sale. Kinpurnie Castle is currently owned by Sir James Cayzer's heir, Robin Cayzer, 3rd Baron Rotherwick .
