history

The name "Ralston" comes from the former fiefdom Ralphistoun , which was named after the youngest son of the Earl of Fife , who received the lands in the early 12th century.

After the family names were introduced in the Central Lowlands , the descendants of the earl's younger son called themselves "Ralston" after their lands. These remained in the family's possession until 1704, when Gavin Ralston sold them to John, Earl of Dundonald , who in turn bequeathed them to his daughter, Lady Anne Cochrane , when she married James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton . Their son sold the lands of Ralston in 1755 to William MacDowal from Castle Semple , an eminent merchant from Glasgow and co-founder of the local Ship Bank . His son, William of Garthland and Castle Semple , sold the lands in 1800 to William Orr , son of a manufacturer from Paisley, who, together with his brother, had made a fortune manufacturing household textiles in Ireland .

In 1797 Orr had acquired parts of the Ingliston land from the Earl of Glasgow , on which he had an elegant country house built in 1810. After purchasing the Ralston lands, he merged all of his lands and named them "Ralston"; he called his country house "Ralston House". In 1840 James Richardson , a Glasgow merchant, secured the property. His son, Thomas Richardson , had the house enlarged in 1864 and added more land to the property.

The Ralston lands were later divided and sold as agricultural land in the late 19th century. The ruins of Ralston House were demolished in 1936, but the former stables now form the clubhouse of Ralston Golf Club . East Lodge and West Lodge from 1865 on what is now Glasgow Road were originally gatehouses on the property.
