Powrie Castle is the restored ruin of a low castle in the north of the Scottish city of Dundee .
history
The castle was built in the early 16th century and destroyed in 1548 by English troops who were then stationed in Balgillo in the course of the Rough Wooing . After that, the castle was rebuilt as two separate buildings that enclose an inner courtyard.
The south wing was built as a tower house with a Z-shaped floor plan and vaulted ceilings . This building is now in ruins. It is considered a Scheduled Monument .
The north wing was built in 1604 in the Renaissance style . The ground floor is also provided with vaulted ceilings and the building serves as a residential building. Historic Scotland has listed the building as a Category A Historic Building.
A competition from the National Trust for Scotland was announced for the restoration of the north wing . William Strickland won this competition and was allowed to buy the building. Today the north wing serves as a private residence. The main entrance is on Tarago Road .
