Plean Castle

Plean Castle , also Plean Tower , Cock-a-bendy Castle , Mengie Castle , Menzies Castle or Plane Castle , is a tower house with an attached country house in the Scottish administrative unit of Stirling . The Tower House dates from the 15th century, the country house from the 16th century.

history

King Robert the Bruce granted the Baronate Plean (or Plane ) to John d'Erth shortly after 1314 . The castle is believed to have been built by Lord Somerville , who acquired the Plean lands by marriage in 1449.

The country house was built around 1528. In 1643, James Somervell, 8th Lord of Plane , sold the baronate and lands to pay off his debts. The castle and manor fell to the Nicholsons and then to the Elphinstones , but both buildings fell into disrepair. In the course of the Jacobite uprising in 1745, troops were billeted on the property.

Sir David Menzies had the buildings restored in 1908, but they were no longer in use by the 1930s. In 1991–1997, Nancy and John Patrick Wright and their sons undertook another renovation to create a home for themselves and a vacation home.

description

Plean Castle originally had three full floors and an attic, as well as a protruding parapet. The great hall is in the Tower House; it has painted beams and a large, open fireplace. There is a sculpture garden and a large pond on the property.

Historic Scotland has listed Plean Castle as a Category B Historic Building.
