Tipping bridge (bridge)
A tilting bridge , also known as a tilting bridge, makes a rotational movement around an axis in the longitudinal direction. In order to create a larger passage opening in this way, the roadway of the bridge must also have a lateral curve , which then lifts up when turning .
The Gateshead Millennium Bridge between Newcastle and Gateshead over the River Tyne is such a tilting bridge, it is probably the only one in the world.
Since April 2011 there is a different type of tipping bridge in Bruges with the Nieuwe Scheepsdalebrug in the course of the N9 over the Ghent - Oostende canal . It manages without a curved roadway, as a small clearance is sufficient for the inland shipping . A special feature is that it does not rotate around an axis, but the principle of a seesaw bridge according to William Donald Scherzer was rotated by 90 degrees. The rocking movement takes place across the road .
