The Krummhardt Church

The church in the hamlet of Krummhardt , Aichwald , Esslingen district , is a medieval house of worship, which is designed in the style of the peasant baroque .

History and equipment

The current church was probably built in the late 15th century; the oldest dated piece of equipment is one of the two bells in the roof turret. According to the inscription, it was cast in 1487. It is not known whether there was a previous building to the church.

The first written mention of Krummhardt took place on September 26, 1399, in 1442 the place and its castle stables belonged to the Lords of Stetten and in 1450 it burned down completely. In the following decades Krummhardt was rebuilt. In 1483 there is a mention of a “new chapel in the hamlet of Krumenhardt, which belongs to the community of Schanbach”.

In 1534, under Ulrich von Württemberg, the Reformation was introduced in Krummhardt; since then the little church has been a Protestant house of worship. About 30 years after the Reformation, Aichelberg got its own pastor. Krummhardt and Schanbach were incorporated there.

Paintings from the baroque period
Pulpit (detail)

In the 18th century the ceiling, parapets and pulpit were painted. In addition to flower and fruit motifs, cheerful faces can also be seen; the pulpit also bears quotes from the Bible as inscriptions. The most beautiful painted piece in the church is the patronage chair of the miller Jacob Schwilck from Baach , which belonged to Krummhardt until 1845. It is decorated with a mill wheel. Originally placed below in the church, it was placed on the gallery when the new organ was purchased.

In 1878 the first harmonium for the church was purchased, and around 1900 a wall crucifix was attached, donated by Krummhardt citizens.

On the eve of the 1956 Kirchweih festival, part of the church roof collapsed. As a result, not only was the roof renovated, but the seating was also renewed and heating was installed. In addition, the paintings were restored and the belfry was prepared for the installation of a second bell, which was hung in 1963. An electric bell was also installed in the course of these repairs and redesigns.

Emil Homolka created a bronze cross with the figure of Christ for the altar in 1966. In 1986 the old electric organ was replaced by a building by the Tzschöckel organ factory in Althütte-Fautspach . The prospectus of the new organ was based on the rest of the church furnishings.

In 1999 the forecourt of the church was redesigned. Two old acacias that had been standing in front of the church had to be felled and were replaced by a spherical line. In 2005 painting work was carried out. In 2009 the parishes of Aichelberg, Aichschieß-Krummhardt and Schanbach merged to form the parish of Aichwald. On this occasion, the so-called fusion tree, a spherical maple, was planted behind the Krummhardt Church.

Bells

The older bell measures 52 cm in diameter and is tuned to tone g. It is the oldest known signed bell by Pantlion Sydlers from Esslingen . It is labeled “+ osana. shark. I. pantlion. sidler. from. donkeys. gos. me. do. man zalt. m. cccc. lxxxvii. iar. ”It is used as a baptismal bell; In 1963, the death and the Lord's Prayer bell was added, tuned to e and marked with the inscription “Glory to God in the highest”.
