Interior of the Chilgol Church

The church Chilgol is a Protestant religious building in North Korea's capital Pyongyang in the district guyŏk Mangyongdae- . It is dedicated to the mother of Kim Il-sung Kang Pan-sok, a Presbyterian deaconess .

In 1899 the church in Chilgol was founded. The church was attended by Kang Pan-sok, Kim Il-sung's mother, who sometimes accompanied her. When the church was destroyed by US bombing at the beginning of the Korean War in 1950 , the government had the church rebuilt in its original location. The reconstruction was completed in 1992 and the consecration followed in November of the same year .

The church is under the authority of the Korean Christian Federation. Services are held every Sunday.

To what extent there is active church life cannot be said for sure; North Korea's constitution guarantees religious freedom , but Christians in particular are persecuted . More on this in the article: Religion in North Korea .
