history

The Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul in Kakanj was built between 1925 and 1927. It was built with donations from the town's Orthodox believers and the hard work of the then priest Sava Ristić . The church was consecrated in 1927 by the then Metropolitan Petar (Zimonjić) of Dabrobosnia.

Metropolitan Petar Zimonjić was murdered by members of the Ustaša during World War II . In 1998 he was declared a saint of the Serbian Orthodox Church by the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church as Holy Martyr Petar Mitropolit Dabrobosanski .

According to Sava Ristić , Vojislav Mijatović was a priest of the Church from 1928 to 1941 . During the Second World War, the church was closed by the German Wehrmacht , demolished and seriously damaged. In 1945, after the end of the war, Father Sava Ristić came back from Serbia and remained the parish priest until 1952. At that time, the church was renovated after the destruction in the war. This was to be the only major renovation of the church after it was built.

After him, priests Miloš T. Minić served in the parish of Kakanj from 1953 to 1955, Tomo Vukasović from 1955 to 1973, Vojislav Čarkić from 1973 to 1974 and Ljubomir Đureinović from 1974 to 1992.

In the Bosnian War , which lasted from 1992 to 1995, Kakanj was not affected by any destruction, so there was no damage to the church. However, while services were regularly held in the Roman Catholic Church at the time, the Serbian Orthodox Church was closed until 1996. The entire Serbian population of Opština Kakanj ( Kakanj municipality) either fled or was expelled from the municipality during the war. With the return of the Serbian population to the community, the church was opened again.

Boris Banduka has been a priest of the parish Kakanj and the Church of St. Apostles Peter and Paul since 1999 , initially only occasionally and from 2001 permanently. He was also a priest in the Serbian Orthodox Church of St. Great Martyr Prokopios in Breza from 1999 to 2001.

architecture

The Peter and Paul Church is a single-nave church, with an altar - apse in the east and a small steeple in the west. The dark red and yellow facade is striking. Typical for Orthodox churches, the church has an iconostasis with icons .
