The Church of St. George the Great Martyr ( Serbian Црква Светог великомученика Георгија Crkva Svetog velikomučenika Georgija ) in the central Serbian town of Smederevo is a Serbian Orthodox church in Serbia . The church belongs to the Braničevo eparchy . It is the town church of Smederevo. The church was built between 1850 and 1854.

History and architecture

The church was built from 1850 to 1854 at the behest of the Serbian Prince Miloš Obrenović in the style of the Serbian Orthodox Manasija Monastery and consecrated on St. Andrea's Day in 1854. It stands next to the town hall and the courthouse in Smederevo town square in the center of town. As one of the first major buildings of the Serbian Orthodox Church, it was built after the Second Serbian Uprising against the Ottomans and was a milestone in the new Serbian-Byzantine architectural style . The architect of the church was Jan Nevol , its builder Andrej Damjanov from Veles .

The church is a combination of a three-conch, curved Greek cross and a five-domed basilica . An imposing baroque church tower rises on the west wall of the church. Overall, the church is a mixture of traditional Serbian-Byzantine style and baroque elements . The dimensions of the church are: length 31.80 meters, width 17.10 meters and height 50.65 meters.

Iconostasis

The frescoes and icons inside the church were painted in 1935 by the Russian artist Andrei Wasiljewitsch Bizenko from Kiev, who gave the church its current image inside. The iconostasis and the frame of the icon of St. George were made from white marble by the Belgrade sculptor Evengij Lavćević .
