Church In

Kirche In (also written KIRCHE IN ; formerly Kirche intern ) is the name of a Catholic magazine published in Austria . It was founded in 1987 by Pastor Rudolf Schermann on the occasion of two controversial nominations of bishops.

The magazine sees itself today as a Christian ecumenical magazine, but also as an organ for internal church criticism and as a spiritual stimulus for new paths in the Catholic Church .

Motivation to start up

The starting shot for the establishment of the magazine was a signature campaign against the ordination of Regensburg professor Kurt Krenn as auxiliary bishop of Vienna , which was planned for April 26, 1987 . He was known as "ultra-conservative", and his statements about other people and views led to violent protests and attempts to block his ordination. The mouthpiece for the “rebels”, who also feared a watering down of Vatican II , was the then rural pastor of Reisenberg and author Rudolf Schermann . At first only hectographed sheets of paper could appear as a print under the title Church intern (KI) through a single donation of ATS 10,000 , which was initially sent to about 3,000 pastors.

The great response and the passing on of the publications by the readers meant that the account balance rose to ATS 500,000 within six months and a limited liability company could be founded, which ensured the monthly publication of the magazine.

Renaming to "Church In"

After a few years, the church was established internally among the liberal to progressive Catholics of Austria, although the clearly church-critical presentation and the insufficient religious content of the paper compared to the first plans were criticized. A redesign and renaming to Kirche In should now herald the transition to a medium for the entire German-speaking area. The magazine describes itself with the words:

"The name, which has meanwhile been shortened to KIRCHE IN, is intended to signal that it is a medium that transports an image of the Christian churches that is IN - because it builds on the origins and not that image of the ' Vatican Church 'which is OUT because it left the origins'.

Attitude to Freemasonry

In the spring of 2004, the church offered the priest Reinhard Knittel , consecrated by the Engelwerk , the opportunity to publish an article on Freemasonry , in which it was presented as the "Daughter of Satan "; the Freemason Kurt Baresch was given the option of a replica. In autumn 2005 the magazine assumed, without presenting any evidence , connections of the Rotary Club , the German Order of Druids and the German Minister of Education Annette Schavan a proximity to Freemasonry and accused Schavan of "dubious shoulder-to-shoulder".
