Church Matt

The first chapel was built between 1261 and 1273. In 1273 this was elevated to the church of Matt , and it is a landmark of the Swiss town of Matt .

The current church probably dates from 1497 and is the oldest surviving church in the Glarus region. Inside there is an important late Gothic wooden ceiling.

Until the ransom of the Glarus family in 1395, the Matter had to pay taxes to the Säckingen monastery . Since the transition to the Reformation in 1528, Matt and Engi have formed a common parish .
