Church of Our Mother of Salvation
The Cathedral of Our Mother of Salvation (in tourist guides and on signposts mostly simply Armenian Catholic Church , Arabic كنيسة الأرمن الكاثوليك, DMG Kanīsat al-Arman al-Kāṯūlīk , Armenian Հայ Կաթոլիկ եկեղեցի ) is the cathedral of the Archeparchy Aleppo of the Armenian Catholic Church in al-Judaide , the Christian quarter of the Syrian city of Aleppo .
history
The Armenian Catholic Church of al-Judaide is on the street al-Telal (شارع التلل, "Bergstraße") on the northwestern edge of the district. Its construction began in 1823 and completed in 1832. This happened after the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II lifted a ban on the construction of new churches in the course of the Tanzimat renovations. During the anti-Christian riots in Aleppo on October 17, 1850, in which around 20 Christians died, the church was damaged, but was later rebuilt. Numerous Catholic Armenians fled to Beirut and Smirni in particular . Due to later immigration, the Armenian-Catholic population of Aleppo increased, especially due to the refugee movements as a result of the genocide of the Armenians during the First World War .
On January 9, 2015, two hours before a scheduled service, the Armenian Catholic Church of Our Mother of Salvation was badly damaged by bombs on the dome during the civil war in Syria , and there was a risk of collapse. After reconstruction, it was reopened in early December 2019.
Furnishing
The Armenian Catholic Church of Our Mother of Redemption, which has a simple wooden roof, is considered to be more modern and more modest compared to the other churches in the district. The church also has an elementary school.
Other Armenian Catholic churches
In addition to the Church of Our Mother of Salvation, Aleppo also has the Armenian Catholic Church of the Holy Cross, consecrated in 1993 in the Ourouba district near Aziziyeh.
