The church of the non man-made savior portrait in the former Andronikov Monastery ( Russian Спасский собор Андроникова монастыря transcribed Spassky Sobor Andronikowskogo monastyrja ) is in the Moscow district Tagansky in the Central Administrative District location Russian Orthodox Church from the first third of the 15th century. It is the oldest partially preserved church in Moscow outside the Kremlin .

Building history

The Church of the Savior Image , which was not made by hand, was built in the period 1410 to 1427 (more precisely probably 1425 to 1427) in place of a wooden previous building that had existed since the beginning of the Andronikow monastery (1357). There may also have originally been a stone church built between 1360 and 1380. The three apsidial cross -domed church with four pillars of the image of the Savior, not made by hand, is an architectural monument of the architectural style of Vladimir-Suzdal . The wall painting of the church, which has not survived, came from Andrei Rublev and Daniil Tschorni.

In connection with numerous developments in the 17th and 18th centuries, the original view of the church was changed. However, the architectural elements of the church building ( Kokoschniken, Sakomaren and others ) were not lost, but remained, albeit hidden behind the new porches and the new roof. Only the church tower was destroyed in the fire in Moscow in 1812 and built as a new tower with a tent roof from 1846 to 1850 .

Under the Soviet rule , the Andronikow monastery with the Church of the Savior Image Not Made by Man was closed for worship in 1918 and used by various organizations. In the 1930s, restorers and architects Pyotr Maximow and Boris Ognjow were working on a restoration project for the church. The restoration was carried out from 1959 to 1960. In 1989 the church was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church .
