Drumcreehy Church

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Church of Drumcreehy (also St. Colman's Abbey ) with the associated cemetery is located in Ballyvaughan in the Civil parish Drumcreehy ( Irish Droim Críche ) in the north of the Burren in County Clare in Ireland .

The ivy-covered ruin shows the picturesque appearance of many church ruins in the Burren. It is one of several medieval ruins indicating a sizable population in the Burren at that time. Drumcreehy was the parish church for the Ballyvaughan area. A tax sheet from 1302 attests to its age and includes its first mention as "Dromcrith".

The nave of the nave church is apart from a portion of the south wall destroyed. The remains of the wall contain a square window in stone carving technique. In relation to the nave, the choir is extremely large. It has a lancet window in the east. Its northern entrance is splendidly decorated on the outside. The bricks in the western part are particularly large and indicate that the church was built in two phases.
