Speicherz from above

Speicherz is a village in Lower Franconia that belongs to the Motten community in the Bad Kissingen district.

geography

The church village is located in the Franconian Rhön , just before the Bavarian-Hessian border. It is idyllically embedded in the wide river valley of the Kleine Sinn and in the Lachsgrund and extends east of the Rhön motorway A7 along the federal road 27 .

Naming

The origin of the place name is a mystery. Several names are documented: 1303 Spachers , 1330 Spichers , 1499 Speicher , later Speicharts , Speicherts and Speicherz . However, if Spachers meant the Speicherz discussed here , there is probably a typographical error in the 1303 document in which an a was written in place of the i . In New High German, the i later became an ei , which explains the development from Spichers to Speicher. The derivation of Spicher , which means memory in High German, seems plausible .

history

The history of the place can be traced back to its first documentary mention in 1303. In the oldest fief book of the Würzburg monastery , 7 hubs (estates or farms) are named in the place, which were a fiefdom of Reinhard von Brende. In 1330 the Fulda prince abbot Heinrich VI sold. von Hohenberg sold his property in the village of Spichers to Apel Kuchenmeister and Dietrich Gutelin for 400 pounds of Heller . It is not known why Apel Kuchenmeister was named the sole owner of the property in 1339 . In 1351 the prince abbot sold a fiefdom in Spichers to Dietz IV von Tungeden. Speicherz used to be a separate municipality , but on May 1, 1978 it was incorporated into the Motten municipality.

religion

The Catholic Church of St. Joseph the Bridegroom in Speicherz

Speicherz is a Catholic village . Speicherz originally belonged to the parish of Oberleichtersbach . When the parish of Brückenau was founded in 1696, however, it was incorporated into it. In 1940 Speicherz was subordinate to the pastoral care office of Kothen , which belonged to the Motten parish. After long efforts, however, Kothen was declared its own parish in 1954, and since then Speicherz has been subordinate to it as a branch. The place received its own church very late. In 1926, a cemetery and a small sandstone church with a bell tower, which is dedicated to St. Joseph , was built, which has since enriched the Speicherz townscape.

economy

The economy in Speicherz is particularly characterized by agriculture . Craft businesses were only able to gain a foothold here to a limited extent.

The restaurant "Zum Biber" is a historic and well-known inn that extends beyond Bavaria's borders. Between 1719 and 1769, the Speicherz municipality repeatedly negotiated with the Court and Pension Chamber of Fulda to set up their own inn. However, Brückenau disrupted the negotiations because of his licensing rights and in 1771 he built an inn himself. Although the innkeeper Lorenz Tremer from Kothen objected to the actions of Brückenau, his efforts were unsuccessful. Another decisive event in the history of the inn happened in 1813: the then tenant of the inn was attacked by a soldier in Brückenau on his way home and so brutally beaten that he succumbed to his injuries a few days later.

Every year the inn is a meeting point for hundreds of visitors, not least because of its own winery. The vaulted cellar , which has been preserved from the Wilhelminian era, is a special attraction in Speicherz.

Infrastructure

The fire station in Speicherz

Speicherz is located directly on Bundesstrasse 27 and thus has a direct connection to the neighboring villages of Kothen and Volkers . The local road network is also connected to the Hessian neighboring village of Oberzell via a district road . The Franconian Marienweg runs through Speicherz .

Educational institutions

In 1925 the school was rebuilt in Speicherz , but it was later converted into a kindergarten . In 1995 this was also closed. Today the children of the Speicherz citizens attend the kindergarten in Kothen and the elementary school in Motten. The "old school" has served as a community center since then.
