Hagby Church

The Church of Hagby ( Swedish Hagby kyrka ) is a church in the village of the same name in the Swedish countryside of Uppland . Today's church was built between 1838 and 1840 based on drawings by Axel Almfelt from 1821. It belongs to the diocese of Uppsala . The previous medieval church had previously been demolished, the building history of which is primarily based on investigations carried out by Eva Bergman in 1935 in connection with the restoration led by Tor Engloo.

Predecessor church

The Romanesque predecessor church consisted of an almost square nave with a floor area of around ten by ten meters, a somewhat narrower choir and a relatively deep apse . It was a little further south than today's church and is already mentioned in a papal letter of December 31, 1220, in which Pope Honorius III. a total of 17 farms in the parish of Hagby and in the neighboring parishes confirmed as belonging to the church. The church was rebuilt several times. First the walls of the apse were reinforced. When the choir was extended to the east a little later, the orientation of the church was also corrected and transferred to the current one. A few years later the choir was changed and widened again so that it was finally wider than the nave.

Today's church

After the old church was demolished, Almfelt's plans were not implemented down to the last detail. a. the number of windows in the nave and tower increased. The cemetery was also given its current appearance in the 19th century, so that nothing of the medieval cemetery or its entrances ( Swedish stigluckor ) remained. Today's church has an entrance in the east and in the south.
