history

The newspaper was founded in 1937. In March 1946 the re-establishment took place after the Second World War. The British military government granted JP Bachem Verlag the necessary license with the number "C.1.236 P" . The publisher still publishes the church newspaper today.

Circulation and range

The church newspaper has a circulation of almost 30,000 copies. At the beginning of the 1980s, the newspaper still had a circulation of just under 150,000 copies. In the early 1970s, the newspaper even had a circulation of over 200,000 copies. The highest circulation, and thus also the highest of all German church newspapers, it had after the war with a quarter of a million copies.

Originally the newspaper was eight pages long, but over the years it has grown to 56 pages. In the first part, events from the world and the church world in particular are discussed. This is followed by the readings and the Gospel text of the corresponding Sunday of the reading year with an interpretation of the passages. In the parish news section, the respective church services and mass intentions are published for each parish . Then there are reports from the pastoral care areas .

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Cologne church newspaper had the highest share of secular news of all German church newspapers with almost three quarters of secular news .
