The building Kirchstraße 13 in Cologne district Rodenkirchen is a villa , which was built in 1909/10. It is located in a position that defines the townscape directly above the banks of the Rhine (Rodenkirchener Leinpfad). The villa stands as a monument under monument protection .

history

The villa was built for the client Wilhelm Kolvenbach (* 1868), a pharmacist and chemist, based on a design by the architect Franz Brantzky . Kolvenbach had announced a competition among Cologne architects in 1908 , from which Brantzky emerged as the winner with the first prize, Professor Paul Bachmann (1875–1954) the second prize and Peter Gärtner with his colleague Jacob Berns (1876–1965) and Ludwig Paffendorf - at the time living in a summer house in Rodenkirchen - each received a third prize. The drafts were drawn up with the stipulation that the “picturesque surroundings next to an architecturally interesting medieval chapel ” were taken into account. The jury praised Brantzky's design for the fact that “the clear and simple structure of the building blends in happily with its surroundings”.

The villa was entered in the monuments list of the city of Cologne on February 24, 1986. It is currently the seat of a private institute that is active in the health sector.

architecture

With up to seven storeys, the villa clearly towers above the surrounding buildings, is integrated into a high bank wall on the Rhine side and is directly adjacent to a half-timbered house from 1656 on its southeast side . Stylistically , it can be attributed to the late Art Nouveau and takes on forms of the romantic castles . The height of the building, which is exceptional in local terms, is mainly due to a high gable . There is a third floor to the reaching of the Rhine front upper chamber , in the arched windows are integrated.
