Kirchstrasse 29

The building at Kirchstrasse 29 is a residential building in Bregenz . It is considered the "narrowest house in Europe" and was first mentioned in 1796.

architecture

The “narrowest house in Europe” does not have its own lateral outer walls , but was inserted into the existing vacant lot. The facade is only 57 cm wide facing Kirchstrasse. Since the front door is a little wider, it extends to the neighboring house at Kirchstrasse 31.

The house between houses No. 27 and 31 becomes wider at an acute angle towards Thalbachgasse and has a width that is normal for a house in the rear. The building has a total of 60 m² of living space.

history

According to the city archives, the insertion of house no. 29 is not historically documented. In any case, it is more than two hundred years old, because it already existed in 1796 and belonged to a wax maker. In 1886 it was bought by the great-grandfather of the penultimate owner (until 2012). Great-grandfather, grandfather and father ran a brush binder and finally also a stroller business with their families. In 1999 the shop was closed and the windows and the front door in the Kirchstrasse facade were bricked up; the entrance was also blocked by a distribution box . Around 2002 the windows and door were restored.

In 2012 houses 27 and 29 were sold by the last owner from the Lang brush binder family; by 2020 both houses were merged and fundamentally renovated. Only the facade now gives the appearance of two separate buildings.
