Kirill Nikolajewitsch Afanasjew

Kirill Nikolayevich Afanasyev ( Russian Кирилл Николаевич Афанасьев ; January 22, jul. / 4. February  1909 greg. In Oranienbaum , Russian Empire ; † 29. March 2002 in Moscow ) was a Soviet-Russian architect, city planner, art historian , university professor and founding member of the Union of Architects of the USSR . Committed to constructivist ideas during his studies , his style changed to socialist classicism in the 1930s .

Life

Kirill Afanasjew was born in 1909 as the son of an officer in the Imperial Russian Army .

In 1918 he moved to Moscow. Afanasjew began his studies at the School for Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (USchWS) and then at the Second Free Workshops (SGChM) in Moscow. He studied until 1930 at WChUTEMAS ( called WChUTEIN from 1927 ) in Moscow in Alexander Wesnin's studio . Afanasyev was a member of the OSA at this time . During and after his studies he worked in Moissei Ginsburg's studio . In 1932 he moved in the workshop no. 1 of the Mossoviet under Ivan Scholtowski .

Residential building for the Geodesija company

From 1934 to 1938 a residential building for the Geodesija company ( 59 Pjatnitskaya Street , Moscow) was built under his direction . In the 1930s he constructed a building for the Yaroslavl State Pedagogical Institute . Also in the 1930s he was involved in the construction of the city of Dwigatelstroi . From 1935 he was a professor at the Moscow Architecture Institute .

During the Second World War he dealt with the reconstruction of the cities liberated by the Germans.

After the war, he worked at the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture of the Academy of Construction and Architecture of the USSR and was involved in the reconstruction of various cities. From 1954 he was a doctor of art history. In 1955 he was a founding member of the Union of Architects of the USSR.

He died in 2002 and was buried in the Golowinski Cemetery.
