Kirjat Mattersdorf, Jerusalem

Kirjat Mattersdorf ( Hebrew קריית מטרסדורף; English Kiryat Mattersdorf ) is an ultra-Orthodox community in the north of Jerusalem , Israel . It was founded in 1948 by Samuel Ehrenfeldt, the last chief rabbi of Mattersdorf (known under the current name Mattersburg ). After his son, his grandson is now the rabbi of the community and holder of the “Mattersdorfer Gelehrsamkeit”, the Torah school there, which before 1938 had a supraregional reputation.

Mattersdorf in the Austrian Burgenland was one of the seven old Jewish communities ( "Siebengemeinden" ) that were under the protection of Prince Esterházy . With the "annexation" of Austria to the German Reich, the Mattersburg Jews were expelled, expatriated and expropriated within a few months. Some of the Mattersburg Jews were able to emigrate, others were entered in transport lists in Vienna and deported to the concentration camps. Around 100 Jewish men, women and children from Mattersburg are believed to have perished in the concentration and extermination camps of the Nazi regime.
