description

The four-story Tower House is isolated on a hill about a kilometer northwest of Ettrickbridge. It was built in the late 16th century on the site of a previous tower that was razed in 1543. The elongated building has a floor area of 8.5 m × 7 m. It was previously enclosed by a fortification wall measuring 27 mx 14 m. The masonry consists of quarry stone with few natural stone details . Kirkhope Tower had two entrance portals, which were arranged one above the other on the south side. In the meantime, however, the upper part has been partially closed by masonry and converted into a window. Unusually, Kirkhope Tower does not have loopholes . A crenellated battlement cantilevered over three sides. The seated house closes with a gable roof , the gable of which is worked as a stepped gable . In 1997 the Tower House was restored and has been inhabited since then.
