Kirmen Uribe Urbieta (born October 5, 1970 in Ondarroa , Bizkaia ) is a Basque writer and winner of the Spanish literary prize Premio Nacional de Literatura . His works have been translated into 14 languages, including English, French, Russian and Japanese.

Life

Born into a fishing family, Uribe studied Basque Philology in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Comparative Literature in Trento , Italy . In 1995 he won his first literary award while serving a prison sentence for conscientious objection. This prize was the Becerro de Bengoa Prize, which he received for his work Lizardi eta erotismoa . In 2009 he was awarded the Premio Nacional de Narrativa for his novel Bilbao – New York – Bilbao .
