Kivinja is a modern fishing village and an archaeological excavation site is nearby. The place lies on the coast in today's Tanzania and is located approx. 20 km north of the Rufijideltas .

During excavations, the remains of a settlement were found that dates from the third to the fifth century AD. Later remains on the site date from the 16th to 18th centuries. The remains cover an area of ​​three square kilometers . Only a small part of the area has been investigated so far. There were examples of local ceramics and iron and lead . The discovery of Roman glass and glazed pottery, which is known from the Middle East ( Sassanid ), is noteworthy , which testifies to an extensive trade.
