Kivitendo is a business open source - software for the areas of enterprise resource planning (Wawi) and Financial Accounting (GL) and is under a free license . The user can access the system via a web browser . This means that any operating system can be used on the client side .
System requirements
A Linux server with PostgreSQL database and Perl as well as other things are required to run Kivitendo . a. LaTeX packages required. Due to the low resource requirements of the application, it can be installed in a virtual environment without any problems, which means that it can also be used with virtualization solutions under other operating systems.
history
The name Kivitendo (proper spelling: kivitendo) comes from Swahili and means "practical". The original name Lx-Office was filled with false expectations, which were derived from the name components and also led to an unwanted name uncertainty. Therefore, a search was made for a new name whose components do not cause any unwanted associations in common parlance . The name change and the fundamentally revised presentation of Kivitendo, such as B. the use of other forum software, met with a divided echo in the community.
The Fork Lx-Office (from SQL-Ledger ) was, according to the lead developers of the personal use of an ERP solution that would meet the requirements of the German market. The data provided as open source by SourceForge found growing popularity among both small and medium-sized companies in the German-speaking area. As the central point of contact for steadily growing inquiries, the question arose for the programmers whether support in the existing form was still economically justifiable. A code review at the end of 2012 showed that, even after around 10 years of open source, the development of the ERP part (the CRM addition is implemented and supported by Holger Lindemann ) was almost exclusively done by Linet Services GmbH. Richardson & Büren turned out to be a further relevant development partner, especially for the financial accounting part.
In coordination with the active project participants, the project was repositioned in early 2012. By acting as a maintainer , Linet Services GmbH wants to ensure that Kivitendo will be continuously maintained and promoted under his patronage. As free software, Kivitendo would thus also be strengthened, as adaptations financed by clients could flow more intensely into the public program code. This should simplify future updates for all users and increase the program quality due to the broader user base.
Since January 1, 2014, responsibility for the project has been with the Bonn-based company Richardson & Büren GmbH.
Kivitendo as a brand
The name "kivitendo" is protected as a word mark (RN 302012017320, AZ 3020120173209) at the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA). The use of the name is free, but a trademark reference is requested if it is used on websites. The logo can be used to give the product a uniform image.
development
In the year of the name change (2012) there was a second version release, contrary to previous practice, which was presented at the kivitendo user meeting in Dresden. In December the version kivitendo 3.0.0 was released. It was announced that the project developers are aiming for a six-monthly update cycle.

The repository is hosted on Github.
In June 2013, LINET Services announced on the kivitendo website that it was giving up its in-house project management tool "Bob" in favor of integration into kivitendo. In cooperation with the cape IT GmbH from Chemnitz a joint project within the framework is implemented, which is a link to the ticket system beyond Otrs to give.
At the beginning of July 2013 the integration of kivitendo into the App Center of the Univention Corporate Server was announced.
