history

The attachment

You enter the temple complex at the foot of the hill through the temple gate, which is designed here as a Niō gate ( 仁王 門 Niō-mon ; 1 in the plan), i.e. as a gate with the two temple guards ( Niō ) to the right and left of the passage. Further up you pass the free-standing "Shiten Gate" ( 四天 門 ; 2) designed as a tower gate , which is dedicated to the Four Kings of Heaven ( shiten [nō] ). On the right-hand side follows the "Hundred Kannon Hall" ( 百 体 観 音 堂Hyakutai Kannon-dō ; 5) and behind it the bell tower ( 鐘楼Shōrō ; 4). On the left is the small Okunoin-dō ( 奥 院 堂 ; 6). - One of the other buildings is an administration building (V), where you can get your pilgrimage book signed.

The current main hall ( 本 堂 Hondō ; 3) dates from the Genroku era (1688–1704). To the right of the main hall there is a small pond (7) called Senji no ike ( 千尋 の 池 ), meaning “bottomless pond”. On the other side is a memorial stone (8) for the haiku poet Matsuo Basho .

Temple treasures

The main cult figure is a thousand-armed Kannon ( 木造 千手 観 音Mokuzō senshu Kannon ), who is usually called Kiyomizu-Kannon. In the Oku-no-in ( 奥 院 ) there is an eleven-headed Kannon ( 木造 十 一面 観 音 Mokuzō jūichimen Kannon ). It is 1.1 m high and is made from the wood of the false cypress . This Kannon comes from the Kamakura period and is registered as a cultural asset of the prefecture.
