Kizhavenmani (other spellings: Keezha Venmani , Kilvenmani and Keezhvenmani ) is a village in the Nagapattinam district of the state of Tamil Nadu in India . The village is about 15 km from the district capital Nagapattinam in the fertile delta of the Cauvery River , which is known for its agricultural products.

Kilvenmani massacre

The village hit the headlines in 1968 when a group of around 44 striking Dalits were burned alive after being locked in a hut by local landowners. The incident became known as the Kilvenmani Massacre . He is remembered every year on "Venmani Martyrs Day". The Marxist Communist Party of India has therefore erected a large monument. The massacre is the subject of the 2014 novel "Rice & Ashes" by the Indian writer Meena Kandasamy.
