Klappergasse (Aachen)

Relief Mundolph and Gundolph

The Klappergasse is a small street near the Aachen Cathedral , which takes its name from an old legend. In 805 the cathedral was inaugurated and Charlemagne invited Pope Leo III as well as 365 bishops , one for each day of the year. On the day before the celebration, however, only 363 of those invited were present. Now God miraculously resurrected the Maastricht bishops Mundolph and Gundolphus , who had died a long time ago, in order to reach the number 365. The skeletons moved in and out of the Klappergasse.

At the end of Klappergasse is the monastery of the Sisters of the Poor Child Jesus , on which a relief of the two dead skeletons created by Dries Engelen is attached. This stone was given to the citizens of Aachen in 1956 by the city of Maastricht .

The Türelüre-Lißje monument by the sculptor Hubert Löneke stands on the corner of the Rennbahn street , and at the upper end of the Jakobstraße there is an archaeological window through which you can see a medieval water channel made of bluestone , which was discovered by chance during civil engineering work in 2005 . The water of the Pau flowed through this, which was used , among other things, to supply the brother mill operated by the canons of the Aachen Cathedral Monastery .
