At today Klarissenstraße in Neuss existed until the secularization a Klarissenkloster . Its buildings were demolished at the beginning of the 19th century to widen the street.

history

The beginnings

In 1283, the widow Wendelmund von Kothausen and her sons enabled the establishment of a monastery in the city of Neuss through a foundation. The Archbishop of Cologne Siegfried von Westerburg confirmed the foundation of a “monasterium sanctimoniale ordinis s. Clarae ”on October 16, 1283.

The sources

In 1896 Karl Tücking published his regesta work "Documents and files from the archive of the Poor Clares in Neuss" in the Schwan-Verlag in Neuss. This includes four documents in full, namely a document for the establishment of a vicarie donated at the Katharinen Altar in the Klarenkirche (document No. 132), a document for the foundation of the brother Jelis von Achen and the sister Alveradis vom Bongart (document No. 138 ), the "Regulations of Vicar General A. Schulken as a result of a revision of the Klarenkloster zu Neuss" of June 13, 1617 (document no. 225) and the confirmation of a benefit with 5 masses in the Klarenkirche by JH Anethan, Suffragan and Vicar General of Cologne from September 15, 1685 (Document No. 248).

The visitation protocol of the visitation of 1788 has also been preserved and, according to Wisplinghoff, is now in the main state archive in Düsseldorf .

The further development

In 1716 work began on building a new monastery on Klarissenstrasse.

The monastery lasted until secularization.

It was not until the end of the 19th century that Clemens Sels and Karl Tücking made a large number of documents and files from the archive of the Poor Clares in Neuss known that show the history of the monastery. Tücking wrote about the property of the monastery: "In 1795 the monastery had a total of 146 acres, of which it received 63 Malter rye as an annual lease".

Today only the vaulted cellar of the former monastery exists, which is used as an event location.
