VH1 Storytellers is a live CD and live DVD from Meat Loaf , released in 1999. Meat Loaf tells some humorous stories from his career and answers audience questions. The DVD contains two additional titles, but some of the songs on the CD are not on the DVD. To promote the CD, a tour followed, which lasted from October 31, 1999 to January 9, 2000.
Concept background
Storytellers is a music series on the US television channel VH1 . In each episode, an artist plays in front of a mostly small live audience and tells stories about his music, writing experiences and memories. It bears a little resemblance to MTV Unplugged . The series began in 1996 with a broadcast of Ray Davies during his storyteller tour and took the name of his first concert. Over 60 episodes were broadcast, and many of the appearances were subsequently released on CD or DVD.
The concert
The concert was broadcast to a small live audience on October 5, 1999 and was later released on CD and DVD. Due to the length of many Meat Loaf songs, the organizers of VH1 asked themselves how songs like Paradise by the Dashboard Light should fit between two advertising blocks that are broadcast every 8 minutes. Meat Loaf said, "When we get to the commercial, I'll pause the song and say, 'the rest will come after the commercial break'". During the concert, Meat Loaf explained the meaning of the word 'that' from the song I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That) using a blackboard and a pointer .
