A graduate ring (engl. Class ring ) is a signet ring , which is usually provided with the coat of arms or logo of the respective school. It can be obtained by graduates at many high schools , colleges, and universities in the United States and Canada to show attachment to the educational institution. In Germany, graduate rings are unusual.

overview

Graduate rings are particularly well established at American universities. The custom began in 1835 at the United States Military Academy at West Point , New York . The MIT class ring , which is created annually by the students themselves, is particularly well known . In the USA, other organizations or institutions also issue signet rings, and championship or club rings are also common.

The University of Rostock has been selling its own seal ring for students and graduates as a merchandising item since 2009 .

Seal rings for universities can be divided into graduate rings and university rings. While graduate rings are reserved for finished academics, university rings can already be worn by students, friends of the university, employees and sponsors.

design

The modern signet ring and the graduate ring are mostly made as positive rings. It can therefore not be used for sealing, since the seal would then be mirror-inverted on the paint.

Typically, the educational institution's logos or crests are used. However, symbols specific to the department ( Aesculapian staff , Justitia etc.) can also be used, or a combination of both.

The graduate ring and the university ring are basically designed the same. However, a graduate ring has also engraved on the pages the degree achieved ( Bachelor , Master , Diploma, etc.) and the corresponding year.
