Klaus Burkhardt (born March 9, 1947 ) is a former German diplomat and was most recently Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Riga , Latvia .

Life

After studying Ancient History, Contemporary History, Political Science and English Literature at the University of Mannheim , he was a research assistant at the Chair of Contemporary History in Mannheim from 1974 to 1979 and also obtained his doctorate. phil.

Joining the Foreign Service in 1979 was followed by assignments in the Foreign Office (cultural department, department for NATO , economic department), at the embassy in Poland (economic officer), at the embassy in Egypt (head of the economic department) and at the embassy in Great Britain (head the press and information department). From 2000 to July 2004, Burkhardt was head of a department in the European Department of the Foreign Office in Berlin, then Ambassador to Jordan. From 2008 he acted as the representative of the Federal Republic at the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah.

Since August 2010, Klaus Burkhardt has been the German ambassador to the Latvian capital Riga and held this post until his retirement . The successor in this function was Andrea Joana-Maria Wiktorin on July 10, 2012 , who was previously employed as head of department in the Foreign Office.
