Klaus Fesser

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Fesser is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Greifswald and mainly deals with solid state physics . He was director of the Institute for Physics from 1996 to 1998 and from 2002 to 2005 . From then until spring 2016 he was dean of the mathematics and natural sciences faculty at the University of Greifswald.

Klaus Fesser received his doctorate in 1979 at the University of Cologne ( on the thermodynamics of solitons ) and then worked at the Institute for Solid State Research at the Nuclear Research Center in Jülich . In the early 1980s he was a visiting scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory . He obtained his habilitation in 1989 at the University of Bayreuth with his thesis: Investigations on the Electronic Structure of Conducting Polymers and was a professor there before he was offered a position in Greifswald in 1995.

He deals with low-dimensional solids such as quasi-one-dimensional conductive polymers (and solitons and polaron excitations in these), nonlinear dynamics in plasmas, bifurcation theory and nanotubes . In accordance with the focus of the University of Greifswald, where research is traditionally carried out in the field of plasma physics and a branch of the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics is located, he dealt with solid-state physics as well as plasma physics , but as dean concentrated on administrative tasks at the university.
