Klaus Schaper (border victim)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Klaus Schaper (born June 5, 1948 in Braunschweig ; † March 11, 1966 near Elend (Harz) ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

The 17-year-old Klaus Schaper lived in Elbingerode and was training to be a radio and television mechanic when he tried to get to the Federal Republic of Germany. When he crawled under a fence, he set off a mine that probably killed him immediately.

A little later, Klaus Schaper's brother lost his job with the GDR high seas fleet, and his sister was not allowed to study.

Walter Nabert from Braunschweig, Klaus Schaper's grandfather, traveled to the GDR to attend the funeral of his grandson. Through him, the West German authorities also learned the name of the young man who had died on March 11, 1966.

A memorial cross today commemorates Klaus Schaper.

Major General Fritz Rothe, former Chief of Staff of the Border Troops Command, was sentenced to a suspended sentence in 1997 by the Potsdam Regional Court for manslaughter of Klaus Schaper.
