João António Antunes Carvalho (born March 9, 1997 in Castanheira de Pera ) is a Portuguese football player who has been under contract with the English second division Nottingham Forest since June 2018 . The former Portuguese junior international can be used in the offensive midfield both in the headquarters and on the wing.

Club career

Benfica Lisbon

João Carvalho joined the Benfica youth department in Lisbon in 2005 when he was eight . On 11 January 2015 he made his debut for Benfica B in the Segunda Liga , when he at 3: 2 home win against Porto B came off the bench.

On January 8th, Carvalho switched to Vitória Setúbal on loan for half a year . At Vitória he made his debut in the top division of Portugal, the Primeira Liga . He came on as a substitute for João Amaral in the away defeat by FC Arouca on February 5 . He scored his first goal for Setúbal on March 19, in a 1-1 draw with FC Porto .

After returning to SL Benfica, he made his debut for Benfica's first team on October 14, 2017, when he was substituted on in the 1-0 away win over SC Olhanense in the Portuguese Cup .

Nottingham Forest

On June 14th, João Carvalho, together with his teammate Diogo Gonçalves , moved to the championship club Nottingham Forest . There João Carvalho signed a five-year contract. The team from the Midlands in England paid a club-internal record transfer fee of 15 million euros for the attacking midfielder . He made his debut on August 4, 2018 in a 1-1 draw with Bristol City . He scored his first goal on September 19 in a 2-1 home win over Sheffield Wednesday . At the end of the season he had scored four goals in 38 league games and prepared eight more.

Under the new head coach Sabri Lamouchi , Carvalho did not manage to convince in the next 2019/20 season , whereupon he increasingly relied on the newly bought compatriot Tiago Silva . In the first half of the season he was still used regularly, but this changed in the second half of the season, in which he was hardly considered. In total, he played only 23 league games in which he was able to contribute a goal and an assist.
