Klaus Thomas Edelmann

Klaus Thomas Edelmann (* 1963 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German journalist, design critic and curator.

Life

Klaus Thomas Edelmann studied law at the University of Frankfurt . From 1985 onwards he worked as a freelancer for the daily newspaper on architecture and design, and from 1987 he worked for the Design Report magazine at the German Design Council in Frankfurt am Main . When Design Report moved to Hamburg in 1993, he developed its editorial concept and became editor-in-chief of the magazine in 1996, which he headed until March 2001. During this time the magazine grew and gained national and international recognition. In 2019 it was discontinued by the publisher.

Klaus Thomas Edelmann is the author of numerous essays and journalistic articles that deal critically with the topics of design, architecture, composition and society; he is also a juror in numerous design competitions. From 2005 he was an associated scientist at the DFG Graduate College "Art and Technology". From 2007 to 2012 he was a member of the Board of International Research in Design (BIRD). In 2012, his contribution “Design becomes an auxiliary discipline of art” sparked an intense debate about the future direction of design education. In 2019 he curated the exhibition One Hundred Years of Dirigible Light at the Museum of Applied Arts Cologne . The exhibition on the history of the construction and design of work lights was shown in a revised version 2020 in the Hamburg Museum for Art and Commerce . Edelmann lives as a freelance journalist and design critic in Hamburg.
