The small tree rat ( Chiruromys vates ) belongs to the rodent genus Chiruromys , which is endemic to the island of New Guinea . The animal lives in the lowland and hilly rainforests in the southern half of Papua New Guinea in the south of the Central Cordillera. Like all representatives of this genus, it is adapted to an arboreal way of life.
features
The small tree rat has pointed ears and a reddish fur, in contrast to the large tree rat and the broad-headed tree rat , which are characterized by round ears and a brownish or grayish fur. The head-trunk length is 84.5 to 126 mm, the tail length 128 to 183 mm, the hind foot length 22.5 to 26 mm, the ear length 13.5 to 19 mm and the weight 23 to 68 grams.
