features

The small spotted insect has a short, thick abdomen and a thorax that is neither saddle-shaped nor extended backwards . The lower legs of the last pair of legs have small spines. The antennae are about as long as the body. The basic color varies from olive to light green. A white or light yellow band extends from the eye over the thorax and down to the abdomen. In the female it extends to the middle of the abdomen, in the male to the tip of the abdomen . The sides of the pronotum have a light border. In the female, the wings of the species are covered by the pronotum, in the male they are strongly shortened, light brown in color and provided with some dark spots. The ovipositor of the female is straight at the base, but then bends upwards. It is serrated on the outer edge.

Way of life and distribution

The great spotted insect makes short, sharp tones at larger intervals. They often stay on low herbaceous plants and inhabit heavily overgrown meadows and bushland. Their distribution area extends from Italy and Croatia via Serbia and Montenegro to Albania , Macedonia and Bulgaria . The adults occur from June to July, but females can still be found sporadically in August.
