The small, long-tailed narrow-foot pouch mouse ( Sminthopsis dolichura ) is a species of marsupial from the genus of narrow-foot pouch mice .
description
The length of the species varies between 150 and 200 millimeters, with the tail being significantly longer than the body and making up 85 to 105 millimeters of the total length. The weight is 10 to 20 grams.
distribution and habitat
The species colonizes two separate areas. One distribution area is in Western Australia on the northwest coast, the southwest coast and the western plateau. The other distribution area is in South Australia , it extends from the Great Australian Bay from the Nullarbor Desert to the Eyre Peninsula west of Port Augusta .
The preferred habitat are forests, semi-arid woodlands, malls, bushes and open heather vegetation.
Way of life and reproduction
The small, long-tailed, narrow-footed pouch mouse is nocturnal . The diet of this species consists mainly of insects , but small reptiles , amphibians and mammals are also eaten.
The males occupy large territories that change from season to season. The females reproduce between 5 and 8 months of age, but only between March and August. The males reach sexual maturity at 4 to 5 months. The boys are born between September and December and weigh only 5 grams at birth. The life expectancy of the females is about two years, the males hardly survive more than a year.
