The small woodlouse hunter ( Dysdera erythrina ) is a real spider from the family of six-eye spiders . As with all spiders in the family, the eyes of Dysdera erythrina are dense, almost circularly arranged on the forehead. The opisthosoma has no dark spots.

Appearance

The body length is 9–14 mm in the female and 6–8 mm in the smaller male. The prosoma of this spider is dark red and the opisthosoma is greyish glossy. The claws of the chelicerae are concave and tweezer-like on the front. The basic limbs of the chelicerae are not half as long as the front body. Dysdera crocata is very similar to Dysdera erythrina . The two types differ e.g. B. in size, whereby Dysdera crocata can get larger.

distribution and habitat

Dysdera erythrina can be found in warm, sunny places, you can find it in juniper heaths, vineyards and quarries, in mountainous areas and on stony dry grassland. It is common in Central Europe, but not very common.

Way of life

During the day, the nocturnal spider hides in a firm webbing sack, usually under stones. Among other things, it feeds on woodlice, which other spiders avoid. Since the chelicerae are greatly elongated, they can grip the back plates of the woodlice and thus attach their venomous bite.

Reproduction

When mating, the male moves towards the female with the buttons spread sideways; the button bulbs protrude at right angles from the end member of the button. It then crawls under the female and inserts both bulbous tips into the two sexual openings. This act can take up to an hour to complete. The eggs are then laid in a more closely woven residential web.

Systematics

There are three subspecies of Dysdera erythrina : Dysdera erythrina fervida , Dysdera e. lantosquensis and Dysdera e. provincialis .
