Cleobulus

Cleobulus of Lindos , Greek Κλεόβουλος ὁ Λίνδιος or Κλεόβουλος ὁ Ῥοδίος , was in the 6th century BC. The tyrant of Lindos (an important port city on the Greek island of Rhodes ). Unlike later tyrants, Cleobulus was not regarded as a tyrant, but was viewed positively by later generations; he was even counted among the seven wise men .

The philosopher and politician Demetrios of Phaleron attributes the following sayings to Cleobulus:

Cleobulus, son of Euagoras, from Lindos said ( Κλεόβουλος Εὐαγόρου Λίνδιος ἔφη )
1. Measure is best. ( Μέτρον ἄριστον. )
2. One should honor one's father. Πατέρα δεῖ αἰδεῖσθαι.
3. Be healthy in body and soul. Εὖ τὸ σῶμα ἔχειν καὶ τὴν ψυχήν.
4. Hear a lot and don't talk a lot. Φιλήκοον εἶναι καὶ μὴ πολύλαλον.
9. Advise the citizens of the best. Πολίταις τὰ βέλτιστα συμβουλεύειν.
10. Control lust. Ἠδονῆς κρατεῖν.
11. Do not do anything violently. Βίᾳ μηδὲν πράττειν.
15. See the opponent of the people as an enemy. Τὸν τοῦ δήμου ἐχθρὸν πολέμιον νομίζειν.
16. Don't argue with the woman and don't be too proud when others are around; one makes you count for a fool, the other for a madman. Γυναικὶ μὴ μάχεσθαι μηδὲ ἄγαν φρονεῖν ἀλλοτρίων παρόντων · τὸ μὲν γὰρ ἄνοιαν, τὸ ὲδὲ μανίαν δύνται π .αραν ναέχει π.
17. Don't beat slaves while drinking wine; otherwise you will be thought to be drunk. Οἰκέτας μεθύοντας μὴ κολάζειν · εἰ δὲ μή, δόξεις παροινεῖν.
18. Marry for equal status; if you are in a better position you will gain masters, not relatives. Γαμεῖν ἐκ τῶν ὁμοίων ἐὰν γὰρ ἐκ τῶν κρειττόνων, δεσπότας, οὐ συγγενεῖς κτήσῃ.
19. Do not laugh with the mocker; for you will be hated by those mocked. Μὴ ἐπιγέλα τῷ σκώπτοντι · ἀπεχθὴς γὰρ ἔσῃ τοῖς σκωπτομένοις.
20. Do not be proud in happiness, do not be low in misery. Εὐποροῦντα μὴ ὑπερήφανον εἶναι, ἀποροῦντα μὴ ταπεινοῦσθαι.
