Lindos with its acropolis

Lindos ( Greek Λίνδος ( f. Sg. )) Is a municipality on the Greek Dodecanese island of Rhodes . The municipality consists of two urban districts and three local communities, which together have almost 4,000 inhabitants and take up about an eighth of the island's area. In Lindos you can find the ruins of the ancient polis of the same name .

history

Lindos was founded around the 11th century BC. Founded by the Dorians on the east coast of the island of Rhodes. Based on finds on the Acropolis , it is now considered likely that Greeks settled near Lindos as early as Mycenaean times, and even the previous presence of Minoans cannot be ruled out. The flowering only began with the arrival of the Dorians.

The location was favorable, as there was not only a castle hill that was easy to defend, but also an excellent natural harbor, which probably gained national importance early on. Lindos seems to have been a center of contacts between the Greek world and the Phoenicians early on . The residents built a temple in honor of Athena Lindia on today's Acropolis of Lindos, surrounded by the remains of the late medieval Johanniter fort, and a Temple of Heracles .

Together with Ialysos and Kameiros , linked in constant competition, Lindos ruled the island for a long time until the three cities merged to form in 408 BC. To found the Polis of Rhodes at the northern tip . However, Lindos was not abandoned, but remained settled. The temples were also still in use and remained important nationwide. In the 3rd century AD the legend circulated that the sage Apollonius of Tyana ascended to heaven in the sanctuary of Lindos.

Lindos is now a tourist attraction and is usually completely overcrowded, especially in the high season. The Acropolis can be hiked on a serpentine path, which can be very difficult in the midday heat. There are also “donkey taxis” available for tourists, which are only available in Lindos on Rhodes. The archaeological remains on the Acropolis are, however, overall rather unspectacular compared to other ancient sites; the columns, for example, which serve as a popular photo motif, are not originals, but modern reconstructions. The other remains of the ancient city include a rock grave and numerous statue bases with some very high-quality inscriptions. The ancient theater on the slope of the Acropolis is currently not open to the public.

Administrative division

Lindos formed an independent municipality until the administrative reform in 2010 and has had the status of a municipality since then. This is divided into three city districts and two local communities.
